Our Story
SURFMAYO is Mayo’s original surf school, based at Carrowniskey Strand near Louisburgh. We are the only Irish Surfing Association (ISA) approved surf school in the Louisburgh and Westport area, with over 25 years of experience delivering safe, professional surf lessons.
Run by experienced surfers Elvis Beetham and Charles O Malley, we provide high quality coaching for all levels, from complete beginners to those looking to improve. Our ISA qualified instructors ensure every lesson is safe, structured and enjoyable.
We operate year round, conditions permitting, on the Wild Atlantic Way at Carrowniskey Strand, Co. Mayo, offering surf lessons, camps and group sessions for individuals, families and visiting groups.

We offer surf lessons for individuals, families, school groups, clubs and stag & hen parties on one of Ireland’s best beginner beaches.

Our Team
Elvis Beetham
Elvis grew up in Cornwall, UK, where he learned to surf in the mid-1980s. After years of travelling and surfing in Ireland, he settled in Louisburgh in 2007 and has been a key part of the SURFMAYO team ever since.
With SURFMAYO: Elvis has over 20 years’ experience coaching and working with groups of all ages, helping beginners build confidence in the water.
Highlights: Through working with community groups and schools in the UK, Elvis has developed skills in communication and empowering individuals and groups to overcome the challenges that are all part of learning to surf. Elvis has surfed extensively across the UK and internationally, and also shapes bespoke handcrafted surfboards under his Booglerize label.
Charles O’ Malley
Charles grew up locally in Murrisk village at the foot of Croagh Patrick. He first surfed with SURFMAYO as a child and has been devoted to surfing ever since.
With SURFMAYO: Charles has worked as a lifeguard and surf instructor on Carrowniskey Strand for over 15 years.
Highlights: Charles has worked, traveled and surfed all over the world in places such as Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, South America and Europe. In 2018 Charles returned to his home roots in Mayo after working office life for a number of years as an engineer to take on a new venture to run SURFMAYO with Elvis Beetham. Charles is dedicated to sharing the joy and excitement of surfing that he has been so lucky to enjoy over the last 25+ years.
